Abstract The value of a country's currency is often considered as the most important price in economy. Exchange‐rate changes can significantly affect profitability exporters, prices paid by consumers, well complicating comparison economies different countries. In this article, we illustrate workings purchasing power parity (PPP) and demonstrate its practical use with cross‐country data covering 50 years since collapse Bretton Woods monetary system. We find that despite prolonged gyrations values multitude trade barriers, forces arbitrage resource re‐allocation are sufficient to overcome many these distortions longer term. also provide broad survey other prominent themes, both extant emerging, international economics highlight importance relationship between exchange rates prices.
